France - October 2018

news 291018 01

Man and Nature was present at the symposium "Saving the Great Apes: an issue for Humanity" held in the French Senate on Monday, October 22nd 2018. Many actors of Great Apes conservation in West Africa gathered to exchange, in particular François de Rugy, Minister of Ecology, and Jean Christophe Bokika, President of the association Mbou-Mon-Tour supported by Man & Nature since 2017.

The conference explored the main issues that weigh on the survival of the Great Apes, in 3 round tables:

  1. The Great Apes, our Humanity’s heritage!
  2. The SNDI (Strategy to combat imported deforestation): which tools to reduce the impact of our consumption of imported products from habitat areas?
  3. The status of Great Apes in french and international law.

With its local partners, Man and Nature continues its actions to combine the conservation of Great Apes and the economic development of local populations, a key factor in the success of conservation projects, but all too often forgotten.

Thus, we support our partner Mbou-Mon-Tour (MMT) in the implementation of income-generating activities such as beekeeping and in the creation of Local Community Forests to secure the traditional territory of communities.
MMT supports and accompanies patrol officers (villagers) on the monitoring and habituation of bonobos in community forests. This activity improves knowledge on the behavior and location of bonobos in order to better protect them.
