France - April 2019
During the Global Shea Alliance conference in Paris on the 1st of April, our colleague Cécile Renier presented how Community Resource Management Areas (CREMA) in Ghana could be a promising framework for community-based conservation.
Indeed, in Ghana, since 2001, communities can organize themselves into a CREMA. Representatives from each community are elected and form a committee. Through the drafting and submitting of a constitution and bylaw to their local government authority, the CREMA is awarded the power to manage its natural resources.
In Ghana, Man and Nature works in partnership with 4 local NGOs on 4 commodities: shea butter and honey in the north, and cocoa and coconut in the south. The project guides the initial set up and strengthening of these local governance structures to ensure sustainable, community-led management of natural resources.
